Another Weekend in Vermont

View from Hildene in Manchester, VT (vacation home of Robert Todd Lincoln- son of Abraham Lincoln).

House upon a hill- Hildene.

Hildene.

A lone Birch tree. I love Birch trees.

View of the formal gardens from the upstairs sitting room.

We just returned from visiting my grandparents in Vermont. Yesterday, while Ben and Damon took the kids bowling, Aunt Jayne, Mel and I went on a tour of Hildene in Manchester. Hildene was the vacation home of Abraham Lincoln's son Robert Todd and his wife Mary. I learned some new things about the family. Abraham Lincoln has no living descendants. He and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln had four sons. Three of them died before adulthood. Robert Todd, the eldest son, had three children: two daughters (Mary and Jessie) and a son (Abraham). Abraham, who they called "Jack", died at age 16. Mary had a son who never married. The other daughter, Jessie, had a son (Robert) and a daughter (Mary who went by "Peggy"). Robert married but never had children. He was the last living descendant and died in 1985. The daughter (Peggy) never married. Peggy inherited the house in 1938 and lived there until her death in 1975. And that was the end of Abe Lincoln's family.

Great pics, Kara. Also, the formal garden, when in bloom, is supposed to look like two stained glass windows. We'll need to go back in the summer...

What a beautiful place that is. I would love to go there some day! :) Also, you have some great information that you shared...how fun to do that, just the girls. I am also sure that Ben and Lanie had a great time.
